KATHMANDU, Nepal — Dramatic footage from Nepal has captured the moment a massive section of a mountainside collapsed into the Kali Gandaki River near Lete in the northern Mustang district, highlighting the growing danger posed by heavy rainfall, landslides and flooding across the Himalayan nation.
The landslide sent huge amounts of rock, soil and dust into the river as the mountainside suddenly gave way. The incident occurred as heavy rain continued to trigger flooding and landslides in several parts of Nepal. Al Jazeera reported that authorities were warning of further flash flooding as river levels continued to rise.
Landslide Adds to Nepal’s Growing Weather Crisis
The latest disaster comes as Nepal continues to deal with the aftermath of devastating flooding in August. Fresh rainfall has once again affected communities, with authorities reporting deaths, missing people and disruptions across several districts.
According to Nepal’s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority, 21 people were killed and five remained missing in different parts of the country between Thursday and Sunday, while separate reports put the recent flood-related death toll at 14 at one stage of the emergency.
The situation has also affected roads, electricity supplies and other infrastructure, making access to some areas difficult for rescue teams.
Dramatic Video Shows Mountain Collapse
Footage circulating online shows the mountainside breaking apart before a huge mass of debris plunges toward the Kali Gandaki River. A thick cloud of dust rises from the impact, illustrating the enormous force of the collapse.
Authorities remain concerned about additional flooding and landslides as rainfall continues. Residents in vulnerable areas are being urged to follow official safety instructions and move away from riverbanks and unstable slopes when advised.
Nepal is still recovering from the catastrophic August 26 floods, which killed more than 1,400 people and left thousands missing. The latest wave of extreme weather has added another challenge for communities already facing widespread destruction and displacement.
The Nepal landslide video from Mustang has since drawn widespread attention online, offering a striking view of the natural hazards confronting the country during the ongoing period of severe weather.
